Preparation

THIS RECIPE IS NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

but you can keep our feathered friends happy this winter!

Chop the lard or suet in squares (don't melt it)
Add the flour, seeds, peanuts, raisins, grated cheese and food colouring if you like. Quantities are up to yourself, just a couple of handfuls should be enough as long as the lard/flour ratio is correct.
You can also add a shop bought bird food mix instead.

Now knead the mixture until it is crumbly.
I used a kitchen machine, but you can do it with your finger tips too (top tip: keep your hands under cold water before starting!) Now add a little bit of water, about 2 - 3 tbsp, knead again this time with your hands. The mixture should now stick together.

Shape the mixture into empty coconut shells, into little balls or put into an empty small yogurt pot with a string attached.

If you have been using food colouring, get creative and alternate colours. I made a Yin & Yang coconut shell.
Food colouring will be brightest when using white flour, but you can also use wholemeal flour, as long as it is plain flour and not self-raising flour as this will have additives.

  • Yellow Food Colouring (optional)
  • 2 -3 tbsp water
